A teenager carried an explosive that detonated in the Federal Security Service main office building in Moscow on Wednesday. Three officers suffered injuries.
The 17 year old muscovite pulled out the explosive from a bag after he made his way into the lobby of the FSB headquarters. Raids were conducted at the teenager’s home, while family and close friends were interrogated.
Further investigation revealed a warning message the 17 year old had published on an anarchist messaging board on the internet shortly before the incident. The message revealed communist leanings and anarchist beliefs, besides a strong dislike for the FSB. Officials are still looking into the case and the suspect’s background.
Two weeks earlier, a firing incident occurred at an educational institution in Crimea, where the instigator was an 18 year old student. While the student died, 21 people innocent people lost their lives and dozens suffered injuries. The incident was gruesome enough for authorities to categorize the case as mass murder.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, terrorism hasn’t been uncommon in Russia. But the incident on Wednesday at the FSB building, a security office heavy on vigilance and protection, surprised many.
The Federal Security Service is the country’s anti-terrorist wing and has mitigated more than 20 crimes linked with terrorist activity, including 15 assaults so far this year. 18 assaults were mitigated in the previous year.
