The Arctic Sea in the vicinity of Jan Mayen, a Norwegian volcanic island was jolted by an intense 6.8 Richter scale reading earthquake at ten minutes to three, early morning on Friday.
The incident hasn’t had any negative impact yet, except for marginal damage to infrastructure. There are currently 18 inhabitants on the island – mainly personnel from the army and meteorological department.
Locals on the island reported nearly half a minute of intense vibrations.
The earthquake off the island was the most intense ever to have occurred in Norway. Jan Mayen has a high frequency of earthquakes. Approximately ten tremor incidents have been recorded on the island over the last half century.
