The Fly Jamaica aircraft, 757-200, headed for Toronto, Canada, had to hastily make a crash landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana after suffering technical problems.
Six passengers onboard suffered injuries but are out of danger and are receiving medical treatment. The 120 passenger strong Fly Jamaica aircraft included 82 Canadians, two babies and eight cabin crew members.
The air travelers continued their journey to Toronto after boarding the flight OJ256 that left the Cheddi Jagan International Airport at around 1 a.m. ET.
A fault detected in the plane’s hydraulic system shortly after takeoff was cited as the source of the problem. The Fly Jamaica aircraft forced its way through a perimeter barrier after crash landing onto the runway. The plane was found with one side of its body at an angle and an evacuation slide inflated for use outside one of the front doors.
A section of the airport has been quarantined for investigation and the root cause of the accident is being analyzed with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
