Frozen pipes have become a recurring reality during the winter season, especially in states with colder climate such as Wisconsin. Every year, frozen pipes induce more water distribution related problems. The damage on a yearly basis amounts to billions of dollars in efforts to restore infrastructure.

While pipes that lie outdoors are most vulnerable, lack of proper insulation, especially in areas such as attics and basements can lead to frozen pipes.

Indoor valves that let out water to taps and hookups that are placed outside should be closed. Freezing can also be avoided by letting out water from the faucets at a dripping pace.

It can be quite hard to diagnose which part of the water system has been frozen once you realize that you’re out of water. Hence it is all the more important to ensure that all the preemptive measures have been taken.

Maintain all pipes at an optimal temperature of 12-13 degrees Celsius, even when nobody is at home. Garage entrances should be properly locked and sealed.

Other areas in the household where frozen pipes can occur include:

  • Basements
  • Attics
  • Garages
  • Kitchens
  • Bathroom cabinets
