Teaching Staff at the Ankeny Community School District will receive active shooter training today after regular school hours. The session will be conducted by the ALICE Training Institute. Even students of Ankeny will be participating in the workshop.

Besides an increase in awareness of what to and what not to do, the ALICE training session for Ankeny teachers is aimed at building abilities needed to react instantly in an active shooter situation. Another key objective is taking stock of available options and responding as per the need of the moment.

The ALICE training session for teaching staff is part of the district’s march towards implementing a full-fledged safety plan that includes active shooter response, as mandated by the Senate File 2364 Act for the state of Iowa.

The key takeaways from the training session include:

  • Responding to a threat with speed
  • Different approaches to erecting blockades
  • Evacuation techniques

The ALICE (alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate) methodology puts a strong emphasis on safety and focuses countering the attacker’s advance through easily accessible escape routes. The session also includes emergency communications and locating students during evacuation.
